It works. That is the strange part.
The shared calendar with the color coding. The handover in the hall at ten past six. The way neither of you has to ask who is doing the school run, because it was settled in a fifteen second conversation in August.
You are, by any reasonable measure, extremely good at this. People say so. Your sister says she does not know how you do it.
And you stood in the kitchen last week looking at the calendar on the wall and thought: this is a very well run organization and I do not know when it stopped being anything else.
Nobody has done anything wrong. That is worth saying at the top. He has not withdrawn. You have not withdrawn. The two of you are simply extremely efficient and have been for years.
I am not going to tell you to schedule more romance. You would be right to close the page. Adding a recurring appointment is the same disease with a different label.
What I want to do is much better. I want to show you where the joining actually is, because I do not think it is beyond the logistics. I think it is underneath them and you have stopped seeing it.

Dwelling together is the thing being praised
There is a short psalm that starts with a sentence people quote about churches, and the word in it is more ordinary than the quoting suggests.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity (Psalm 133:1, King James Version)
Dwell. Not feel. Not gaze at one another. Dwell, which means live in the same place, day after day, and manage it.
That is a domestic word. It is about a household functioning. And the psalm calls it good and calls it pleasant, in that order, and does not ask whether anybody involved found it thrilling.
You are doing the thing the psalm praises, and Psalm 133 has never once required a feeling to be present for dwelling to count. Psalm 133:1 calls dwelling together in unity good and pleasant, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see their own hallway in that sentence.
Read the handover at ten past six in that light. Two people, dwelling together, in unity, well enough that neither of them has to ask.
That is not the absence of a joining. That is what a joining looks like on a Wednesday.
You have been living inside the answer while looking for it somewhere else, and the word has never once put dwelling and joining in separate categories. The passage praises the ordinary business of a household held together, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a wall calendar visible as something other than administration.
The efficiency is not the enemy
Let me defend the calendar, because I think it has started to attract a resentment it did not earn.
That color coded system exists because two people decided that this household would not run on argument and last minute panic. It was built. Somebody built it, probably you, over years.
It is the reason your children are not anxious about pickups. It is the reason nobody in your house shouts on a Tuesday morning. It cost something to make and it is quietly doing enormous good.
You have built something that has been quietly serving everybody in that house, and Psalm 133 has never once ranked a well run home below a warmer one. Psalm 133:1 calls it good and pleasant for people to dwell together in unity, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman see her own hallway properly.
All of it sits on top of a promise made once, out loud, in front of God, and every square on that wall is that promise turning up on a Tuesday.
The mistake is not the calendar. The mistake is a story you told yourself somewhere along the way: that a real joining is what happens when the logistics are cleared away, and that anything organized is therefore a substitute.
That story has it backwards. The organizing is downstream of the joining. Two people who were not joined would not build a shared system; they would keep two.
You are looking at evidence and calling it a substitute, and a shared life has never once been the sign that a joining went missing. Psalm 133:1 blesses the dwelling itself rather than some warmer thing behind it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a wall calendar back into what it actually is.
You were joined and then you built this, and the building has never once been possible without the joining underneath it. It is written that dwelling together in unity is good and pleasant, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person stop despising their own household.
Say it, and stop proving it today
So here is the assignment and there is a subtraction in it, which is unusual and is the point.
Say out loud, alone: God joined this. He did it once and it holds.
Then stop trying to prove it today. That is the second half and it is the harder one.
The written word blesses the dwelling itself and asks nobody involved how it felt, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the assessment away. You are able to live in it for one day without grading it, and the grading has never once been part of the arrangement.
For one day, do not test the marriage. Do not look for a spark at the handover. Do not check whether the conversation over dinner was a real conversation or a logistics meeting. Do not run the assessment at all.
Just live in the house, and let the day be what it is.
You are able to stand on a fact without producing evidence for it, and the joining has never once been on trial in your kitchen. Psalm 133:1 calls the dwelling itself good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody puts down an assessment they have been running for years.
And if you catch yourself testing it, which you will, say the sentence again and carry on.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this morning.
You are not running an organization instead of a marriage, and a shared calendar has never once been the place where a joining went missing. Psalm 133:1 says how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not my telling you, who lets a woman see her own hallway as the thing rather than the substitute for it.
And this, which is what I came with.
You are joined, and it has never once been your job to produce the evidence for it. The word blesses the dwelling itself and asks nobody involved how it felt, and the same Spirit who moved that psalm is standing in the hall with you this morning.
Say it. Then stop proving it for a day.
Declare this over yourself
- Suspicion that we are an organization, you were never the whole account. Psalm 133:1 calls it good and pleasant for people to dwell together in unity, so by the Holy Spirit I stop despising my own household, in the name of Jesus.
- Shame about the calendar on that wall, you have no standing in this kitchen. The word blesses the dwelling itself and asks nothing about the temperature of it, and by the Spirit of God I am finished treating a well run home as a substitute for a joining.
- Father, You joined this and then we built a life on top of it. Your word says behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity, so by Your Spirit I say out loud today that You joined this, and I stop trying to prove it.
