It Happened On A Tuesday

You have gone back over that day more times than you have told anybody.

Looking for it. The moment. The point at which two people became something they had not been at breakfast.

And you cannot find it. You remember the heat, and your brother's speech, and a woman crying in the third row who you still cannot identify. You do not remember anything that felt like a joining.

So you have carried a private conclusion for a long while now. That whatever happens to other people did not happen to you. That everybody else got a moment and you got a Tuesday.

I want to go at this directly, because I have met that grief in men before and it is quieter and more stubborn than most.

The moment you are looking for is not a feeling. It never was. And you did not miss it, because it was not the sort of thing a person can miss.

Reported, not experienced

There is a sentence in Matthew, said in the middle of an argument, and I want you to notice what kind of sentence it is.

What therefore God hath joined together (Matthew 19:6, King James Version)

That is a report. It is not an instruction and it is not a description of anybody's experience.

Nobody in the passage is asked how the joining felt. Nobody is asked whether they noticed it. A thing is stated as having been done by God, in the past, and the two people involved are not the subject of the sentence at all.

You are inside a completed act you were never required to feel, and Matthew 19 has never once made the noticing of it part of the transaction. Matthew 19:6 reports that God joined them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a report into ground under a man's boots.

That is a very different thing from what you have been hunting for. You have been looking for an experience. Scripture is describing an act.

You have been searching for a sensation where a promise was made and an act was performed, and the two have never once been the same category of thing. The passage puts God in the position of the one doing the joining, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a man he was not left out of anything.

The ordinary shape of large events

Let me put this in the language I actually think in, because a general principle does more here than a comfort.

I set a gate post with my grandfather off the Beaver Creek road in a March I could tell you the week of. Nothing happened while we did it. We dug, we set it, we tamped it, we went in for dinner. There was no moment.

That post held a gate for forty years. It held it in ice and it held it in the flood of ninety seven. A thing was done that day that has outlasted every dramatic afternoon I can remember, and none of us felt anything at the time except cold.

That is how nearly all the load bearing things in a life get done. Quietly, in ordinary weather, with nobody moved.

You are standing on something permanent that was done on an unremarkable afternoon, and the absence of a feeling has never once meant the absence of an act. Matthew 19:6 states the joining as a thing God did and leaves everybody's emotions out of the account, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man value a Tuesday properly.

You have a promise God joined two people to, and neither the promise nor the joining has ever once required you to feel something while it happened. It is written that God hath joined them together, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a plain report enough for a man who wanted a moment.

Say it, and stop hunting for it

So here is the assignment and there is a subtraction in it, which is what most men in your position actually need.

Say out loud, alone, somewhere outside if you can: God joined this. He did it once and it holds.

Then stop going back over that day. Not forever. For one day. Today.

Do not look for the moment. Do not run the film. Do not ask yourself again what you were doing at half past two in the afternoon.

You are able to stand on a report without producing a memory to match it, and the record has never once needed your corroboration. Matthew 19:6 reports the act with nobody's experience in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man who has stopped searching his own wedding.

And if you catch yourself back in that church, say the sentence again and go and do something with your hands.
