I Cannot Find The Video

There was a tape. Somebody's uncle had a camcorder and there was definitely a tape, and at some point in four house moves it stopped being anywhere.

You did not think about it for years. Then one evening you tried to tell somebody what you had actually promised and you got about eleven words in and stopped, because you were not sure the next part was right.

And since then you have been looking. Not obsessively. But you have opened boxes you had no other reason to open.

Here is what I want to name, gently, because I think you already half know it. You are not looking for a video. You are looking for permission to trust yourself about the most important sentence you ever said.

And a tape would not give you that. If it turned up tomorrow, you would watch it once, and then you would want to watch it again, and the wanting would not stop, because the wanting is not about the footage.

So let me take the whole search off you and put the record somewhere it cannot be lost in a house move.

The record was never held in your memory

Start here, because it changes what the search was ever for.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands (Isaiah 49:16, King James Version)

Graven. Not written, not noted, not filed. Cut in. The word describes a thing done to a surface that does not then get updated or misplaced or left in a box in a loft.

Isaiah 49 is spoken to people who had said out loud that God had forgotten them. That is the setting. It is a reply to the exact fear you are carrying about a much smaller thing.

You are engraved somewhere that four house moves cannot reach, and the word has never once put the record of you in a place that degrades. Isaiah 49:16 has the graving done on the palms of His hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that an answer to a woman searching a loft.

Read the location too. The palms. The part of a hand that is in front of a person constantly, that they see whenever they do anything at all.

You have a place in front of Him that does not require finding, and He has never once needed a reminder of what you said. The passage puts the engraving where the hands are always working, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a kitchen.

Why the searching does not end

I want to be honest about the shape of the search, because naming it takes most of the weight out of it.

The reason another look through the boxes never satisfies is that the boxes were never the problem. The problem is a very ordinary human thing: memory softens, and the softening feels like loss, and loss feels like it must be your fault.

It is not your fault. Twenty years does that to everybody's memory of everything. The wedding is not special in this. You cannot reliably quote a conversation from last March.

What makes this one hurt is that you gave it more weight than any other sentence in your life, so its softening feels like a betrayal of the weight.

You are not careless with what mattered, and softening has never once been the same as not meaning it. Isaiah 49:16 keeps the record cut into a hand rather than held in a head, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman her memory was never the load bearing part.

Which means the search can stop, not because it failed, but because it was aimed at the wrong shelf.

Say it without checking it

Here is the thing I would have you do, and the whole point of it is that there is no verification step.

Say your vows out loud, alone, to God, and do not compare them to anything.

You are speaking to the one who did the engraving, and He has never once asked for the recitation to be checked against a copy. Isaiah 49:16 has the graving done on His own palms, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the verification step out of a woman's hands.

Not to a printed order of service. Not to what your sister remembers. Not to a tape, if one turns up next week.

Whatever comes out of your mouth is what you say to Him this morning. If it is four lines, it is four lines. If you get a phrase wrong, the phrase is wrong and nothing about the promise moves.

You are speaking to somebody who already holds the accurate copy, and the word has never once made accuracy the price of being heard. Isaiah 49:16 has the graving done by Him and kept by Him, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives an imperfect recitation without correcting it.

And when the urge comes to check it afterward, and it will, say out loud: it is graven, I do not have to hold it. Then put the phone down.
