I Came Home Heavier Than I Left

It happens in cafes and at other people's tables and in the row in front of you at church.

Two people, easy with each other, laughing at something small. The way one of them puts a hand on the other's arm without thinking about it. The private joke that lands in half a second.

And you watch it, and something in your chest goes down about two floors, and then you go home and put the kettle on and are quieter than usual for the rest of the evening.

You have never said this to anybody, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like a complaint about your husband, and it is not a complaint about your husband. He has done nothing.

So let me name the thing plainly and then take it apart, because I think it can be taken apart.

You are not envying their marriage. You cannot envy a marriage; you have never been inside one but your own. What you are watching is four seconds of two people's easiest moment of the week, and you are comparing it to the whole of yours.

That is not a fair fight and it was never going to be one.

Fruit grows and is not manufactured

There is a list in Galatians that gets used as a checklist, which is nearly the opposite of what it is.

the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering (Galatians 5:22, King James Version)

Fruit. Not achievement, not output, not results. Fruit.

The whole force of the word is that fruit is grown rather than made. A tree does not manufacture an apple by trying. It draws on what it is rooted in, over a season, in weather it did not choose, and the apple arrives.

You are growing something rather than producing it, and Galatians has never once made this a thing a person could manufacture on demand. Galatians 5:22 calls it fruit of the Spirit rather than fruit of effort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the growing while a person is not watching.

And here is what that does to the cafe. What you saw across that room was fruit on somebody else's tree, in their season, in their weather. It tells you nothing whatsoever about your own root.

You have no way to see your own root from across a room, and no verse has ever once made another couple's fruit a measurement of yours. The passage names the Spirit as the source, and the Spirit of God is the one who is growing something in a season you cannot see the end of.

What you are actually comparing

Let me make this concrete, because concrete is what breaks a comparison.

You saw four seconds. You did not see their Tuesday. You did not see the drive home or the thing neither of them says. You did not see the eleven years underneath the four seconds or whatever those eleven years cost.

And on your side of the comparison, you brought everything. Every flat evening, every silence, the whole ledger.

Four of their best seconds against all of your worst ones. There is no marriage on earth that survives that comparison, including theirs.

You are running a comparison that could only ever have one result, and the losing of it has never once been information about your house. Galatians 5:22 puts the fruit on the Spirit's side of the ledger and not on the observer's, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a scale out of a woman's hands.

And the weight you carry home is real. I am not calling it imaginary. It is the weight of a comparison, which is a genuine weight, and it is not the weight of your marriage.

You were carrying somebody else's four seconds home in your coat, and it has never once belonged to you. It is written that the fruit is of the Spirit, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person set down a load they picked up in a cafe.

Say it, then do one plain thing

Here is the assignment and it has a small extra part, and the extra part is the useful one.

Say out loud, alone: the promise is not the feeling. What I promised was presence, and I am present.

Then do one ordinary thing for him. Ordinary. Deal with the thing he keeps forgetting. Fill the car. Order the part.

It is written that the fruit is of the Spirit and not of the effort, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the growing while nobody is watching. You are doing an ordinary thing in ground you cannot see into, and it has never once been your job to produce the harvest.

Small enough that he does not ask about it.

And here is the extra part. The next time it happens across a room, say it right there, silently, in your own head: that is four seconds and this is a life. Then look away and go back to your conversation.

You are able to put a weight down in the room where you picked it up, and it has never once had to be carried home first. Galatians 5:22 puts the growing in the Spirit's hands and out of the observer's, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with somebody looking away from a table across a cafe.
