You are good at it. That is the part nobody understands, including you.
The hand on his back going into the room. The little laugh at the story you have heard ninety times. The way you say his name when somebody asks about him. All of it lands, all of it is convincing, and none of it costs you anything at all, because there is nothing behind it to spend.
Then you get in the car and the whole apparatus switches off in about four seconds and you drive home in a silence that neither of you comments on.
That switch is what is exhausting you. Not the marriage. The switch.
I want to say two things before anything else, because I think you are braced for both of them.
I am not going to call the public version a lie. It is not a lie. Everything you did in that room you meant as a commitment, and a commitment carried out without a feeling behind it is not fraud. It is the harder version of the same thing.
And I am not going to tell you the feeling comes back if you keep performing. I do not know that and neither does anybody who says it.
What I am going to do is take you to a verse that puts God in the car with you, which is the only place on that whole evening where nobody was.

Nigh unto them that are of a broken heart
There is a line in Psalm 34 that goes to a very specific address, and I want you to notice which one.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18, King James Version)
Nigh means near. Close. Not observing from a distance, not waiting for an improvement, near.
And the address is a broken heart. Not a repaired one. Not a person who has managed to feel something again. The nearness is aimed at the condition itself.
You are the exact address that verse is written to, and Psalm 34 has never once required a person to feel better before He comes close. Psalm 34:18 puts the LORD near to the broken heart as it stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a parked car at eleven at night.
And here is the thing about the car. In that room, thirty people saw the performance. In the car, nobody saw anything.
Except that the verse says otherwise. The nearness is not to the version of you that performed well. It is to the one in the passenger seat with nothing left.
You have never once been alone in the four seconds after the switch, and the word has never put His nearness at the public end of the evening. The passage sends Him toward the broken condition rather than the recovered one, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a parking lot at the end of a night.
The performance was a commitment, not a fraud
I want to defend you against yourself for a minute, because I suspect nobody has.
Calling it performing is doing damage, because performing implies an audience being deceived.
Look at what actually happened. You decided, in advance, to treat him well in public whatever you felt. Then you did it. Then you kept doing it for two years.
That is not deception. That is a person keeping an undertaking with no fuel in the tank, which is a considerably more serious achievement than doing it while feeling wonderful.
You are doing the hard version of the thing rather than the easy version, and it has never once been dishonest to keep a promise you cannot currently feel. Psalm 34:18 brings God near to the broken heart while it is still broken, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman that faithfulness without heat is still faithfulness.
The tiredness is real and it is not moral failure. Doing anything without fuel is tiring. That is physics, not character.
You are tired for an entirely ordinary reason, and exhaustion has never once been evidence of a false heart. It is written that He is near to the broken hearted, and the Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in the tiredness rather than after it.
Let the car be the place you say it
So here is the assignment, and I want you to do it in the car, on purpose.
Not at home. Not in church. In the car, in the four seconds after the switch, which is the moment two years have gone into pretending is not happening.
Say out loud: the promise is not the feeling. What I promised was presence, and I am present.
You are saying a true thing in the least warm minute of the week, and Psalm 34 has never once required a warm room for it. Psalm 34:18 puts the LORD near to the broken heart in its own condition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a parked car while somebody says one sentence.
Then, in the next day or so, do one ordinary thing for him. Ordinary. Fill the car. Collect the thing he ordered. Deal with the appointment he has been putting off.
Nothing romantic. Nothing that raises the temperature of the evening. Small enough that he does not ask.
You are able to say a true thing in the emptiest moment of the week, and it has never once needed a warm room to be said in. Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness at the broken end, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a car on a Tuesday night while somebody says one sentence out loud.
And then drive home. Do not analyze it.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.
You are not a fraud who has been getting away with something, and two years of unfelt faithfulness has never once been two years of deception. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who moves that off a page and into a parked car.
And this, which is what I came with.
You have company in the exact four seconds you thought were private, and He has never once needed the performance to be over before coming near. The word sends His nearness toward the broken heart in its own condition, and the same Spirit who moved that psalm is in the passenger seat.
Say it in the car. Then drive home.
Declare this over yourself
- Distance between the room and the car, you were never a fraud being exposed. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, so by the Holy Spirit I stop calling my own faithfulness a performance, in the name of Jesus.
- Exhaustion of the switch, you have no verdict to hand me. The word puts His nearness at the broken end of the evening rather than the composed one, and by the Spirit of God I am finished reading tiredness as a false heart.
- Father, You are near to a broken heart in its own condition and You do not wait for it to mend. Your word says the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, so by Your Spirit I say out loud in the car tonight that the promise is not the feeling.
