There is an account she does not have the number for. It is not large and there is nothing in it you would be embarrassed about.
There are two evenings a week that are yours and have been for fourteen years, and they are good evenings and nobody has ever complained about them.
And there is a way you make decisions, quickly, in your own head, and then tell her, which you have always called being decisive.
None of that is a scandal. I want to say that clearly before I say anything else, because a man reading this does not need another voice suggesting he is a disappointment.
But you did the arithmetic yourself, last month, in the car, when a form asked a question about joint assets and you found yourself pausing.
And what you thought was: I have been married for fourteen years and I am still, in some quiet part of the way I live, running my own household.
I am not going to tell you to hand everything over tomorrow. That would be a program, and programs are not what this site does.
I am going to ask what the door you keep open is for, and then I am going to show you something in Genesis that I think will loosen it.

Not good to be alone
There is a sentence near the front of Genesis that gets used at weddings and is stronger than the weddings suggest.
It is not good that the man should be alone (Genesis 2:18, King James Version)
That is God speaking about a man before anything had gone wrong anywhere. There is no sin in the story yet. Nothing is broken.
And the assessment is not that being alone is inconvenient, or lonely, or unfortunate. It is not good. That is a judgment about a condition, made by the one who made him.
You are living against a condition God Himself named as not good, and Genesis has never once treated a man's self sufficiency as a virtue. Genesis 2:18 has God assess aloneness as not good before anything has gone wrong, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man hear that as concern rather than as criticism.
That is what makes the account and the evenings and the quick decisions worth looking at. They are not sins. They are aloneness, kept back, inside a marriage.
You have been maintaining a small solitude on purpose, and the word has never once called that safety. The passage names the condition rather than the behavior, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man see what he is actually holding.
What the door is for
Now the question, and I ask it without an accusation in it.
What is the door for?
I have known a lot of men who keep one, and in nearly every case it is not about wanting to leave. It is about not being able to bear the thought of being that exposed to another person.
If you never hand over everything, then you can never be entirely stranded. It is not a plan for going. It is an insurance against being left with nothing.
And that is fear, not disloyalty. It usually goes back a long way, often to a house you grew up in where somebody was left with nothing.
You have been protecting yourself against an outcome rather than reserving a way out, and no verse has ever once called that wickedness. Genesis 2:18 identifies aloneness as the trouble rather than the safeguard, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names a fear without shaming the man carrying it.
You were joined by a promise and by God, and the door has never once made that joining any less complete than it already is. It is written that it is not good for the man to be alone, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a man his covenant is whole while his habits catch up.
That last part matters. The joining is not partial because you are. It is already whole. What is provisional is the way you have been living inside it, and that is a different and much smaller problem.
Say it, and stop today
Here is the assignment, and it is not the one a man reading this would be braced for.
I am not asking you to close the account. Not today. Not as a result of an article.
Say out loud, alone: God joined this. He did it once and it holds.
You are standing on something God finished before your habits caught up, and Genesis has never once made a covenant wait for a man to be tidy. Genesis 2:18 puts the assessment of aloneness in God's own mouth before anything had gone wrong, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a man says one sentence in a hall.
Then stop trying to prove it today. For one day, do not audit yourself. Do not go through the list of what you keep back and grade it. Do not decide what kind of husband that makes you.
The joining is not on trial, and neither are you.
You are able to stand on a whole covenant with an unfinished life, and the covenant has never once waited for the life to catch up. Genesis 2:18 has God name the condition before anybody had done anything wrong, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present with a man in a car who has stopped grading himself.
And when you are ready, which may be a month from now, tell her about the account. Not as a confession. As a fact.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this morning.
You are not a man whose marriage never fully took, and a door kept open has never once been able to make a joining provisional. Genesis 2:18 says it is not good that the man should be alone, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who names a fear without turning a man into the accused.
And this, which is what I came with.
You have a whole covenant standing over an unfinished life, and it has never once been waiting for you to be finished. The word puts the assessment of aloneness in God's own mouth before anything had gone wrong, and the same Spirit who moved Genesis is standing in the hall with you.
Say it. Then stop grading yourself for a day.
Declare this over yourself
- Habit of keeping a door open, you were never protection. Genesis 2:18 says it is not good that the man should be alone, so by the Holy Spirit I stop calling a small solitude safety, in the name of Jesus.
- Nineteen seventy four in my mother's kitchen, you have no claim on my house. The word puts the assessment of aloneness in God's own mouth before anything anywhere had gone wrong, and by the Spirit of God I am finished paying for something that happened to somebody else.
- Father, You joined this whole and You did not wait for me to be finished first. Your word says it is not good that the man should be alone, so by Your Spirit I say out loud today that You joined this, and I stop grading myself over it.
