Saying It AgainHebrews 10:23

The Same Words With The Weight

This message is for the reader who can use the original sentence again only if it is allowed to mean something heavier now than it meant then

You do not want new words. That is the first thing to establish, because most people in this position do.

You want the same ones. The exact sentence, in the exact order, the way it was handed to you and the way you said it.

But you want it to mean what it means now. Not what a person of twenty six thought it meant. What twenty years have loaded into it since.

And you have not been able to work out whether that is allowed. Whether a sentence can be reused at a heavier weight, or whether saying the same words again would be a kind of pretending that nothing has changed.

Before we go on, and this stands at the top of every article in this row: if you cannot say it today, you are not failing at anything. Nothing here is asking anybody for anything they do not have.

For everybody else, the answer is that words are built for exactly this, and there is a verse that shows it happening.

The Same Words With The Weight

Hold fast the profession

There is a line in Hebrews about holding on to something said, and the structure of it answers your question.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised (Hebrews 10:23, King James Version)

The profession. A said thing, made once, in words, and then held on to across time.

Notice that nothing in the instruction involves restating it in updated language. The profession stays what it was. What changes is the person holding it, and the weather they hold it in.

You are able to hold the same profession through changing weight, and Hebrews has never once asked anybody to reissue it in new terms. Hebrews 10:23 keeps the profession constant and puts the effort into the holding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man use his original sentence at its current weight.

And the second half is where the load actually sits. He is faithful that promised. The steadiness in that verse is on God's side, which is why the same words can carry more each year without breaking.

You have a sentence that can take the weight because of who is under it, and no verse has ever once required a stronger form of words as the years go on. The passage puts the faithfulness on the one who promised, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a sentence up while it gets heavier.

Words are made to do this

Let me say something plain about language, because it removes the last of the obstacle.

Words carry different weights at different times and this is not deception. It is the normal operation of speech.

A man says my father to a child and to a grieving adult and the word is the same and the weight is different by a factor of a thousand. Nobody thinks he changed the meaning. The word grew because the man did.

So a vow said at twenty six and said again at forty six in the same syllables is not a pretense that nothing changed. It is the ordinary way a real sentence works over a life.

And the sentence you were handed was designed for that. Those words are old and they have been carried by an enormous number of people through an enormous amount of weather, and they were built to hold weight rather than to describe a feeling.

You are able to say the same syllables and mean far more by them, and that has never once been pretending. Hebrews 10:23 holds one profession fast through everything without altering it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets an old sentence carry a man's whole twenty years.

You made a promise in words that were already old when you got them, and they have never once needed replacing to keep up with you. It is written that we hold fast the profession, for he is faithful that promised, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps the words steady while the weight goes up.

One sentence, the original one

Here is the assignment and for you it is the plainest one on this page.

Say one sentence of it again, out loud, to God, with today's knowledge in it. And use the original words.

Not updated. Not translated. The sentence that was handed over on the day, said again by a man who now knows what it costs.

It is written that we hold fast the profession without wavering because He is faithful that promised, and the Spirit of God is the one holding it up while the weight goes on. You are able to load twenty years into an old sentence, and it has never once been at risk of breaking.

Something like the line about for better or for worse, said slowly, by somebody who has met the worse.

Out loud, alone. Not to her, not as an event, and nobody needs to be told.

And you may find you have to stop in the middle of it. That happens with weight and it is not a failure. Start again or leave it for another day.

You are able to say an old sentence at a new weight, and the words have never once been too small to take it. Hebrews 10:23 holds one profession fast without altering a syllable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a man says a familiar line slowly and means all of it.

The breakthrough

Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this afternoon.

You are not pretending nothing changed, and wanting the original words has never once been avoidance in you. Hebrews 10:23 says let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who confirms an instinct a man had been suspicious of.

And this, which is what I came with.

You have a sentence built to carry more than it did, and it has never once been in danger of breaking under twenty years. The word holds one profession fast and rests the whole of it on the faithfulness of the one who promised, and the same Spirit who moved Hebrews is standing on the step with you.

The original words. At today's weight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question of whether the old words can carry this, you were always answerable. Hebrews 10:23 says let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, so by the Holy Spirit I say the original sentence at today's weight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Suspicion that wanting the old words is avoidance, you have no standing here. The word holds one profession fast across everything without updating a syllable of it, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating my own instinct as a dodge.
  3. Father, You are faithful that promised, which is why the same words can carry more each year without breaking. Your word says let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, so by Your Spirit I say the original sentence again today, slowly, with what I know in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
