Not The Same Way Now

You could say it. That is what you want on the record before anything else.

If somebody stood you up tomorrow and asked whether you would make the promise again, the answer is yes and it is not a hesitant yes.

But you would not say it the way you said it. Not those words. Not in that voice. Not with the enormous unqualified confidence of a woman who had no idea what she was doing.

And somewhere in you there is a rule that says a renewal only counts if it matches the original, and since yours would not match, you have not attempted it.

I want to take that rule out, and then I want to give you something small enough that you could actually do it this afternoon.

And before either of those, something that has to be said and never gets softened on this page: if you cannot say it today, you are not failing at anything. There is no pressure on this page and there never will be. Some people arrive here on a day when the sentence will not come, and that is a real day and it is not a verdict.

I will pay my vows now

There is a line in Psalm 116 with a very specific timing in it, and the timing does all the work.

I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people (Psalm 116:14, King James Version)

Now. Not again. Not in the same terms as before. Now, which is a word about the present moment and the person standing in it.

And the psalm around it is written by somebody who has been through something rough. He is not the man he was when he made the vow. The whole psalm is about what happened to him in between.

You are able to pay a vow as the person the years have made you, and Psalm 116 has never once required the original voice back. Psalm 116:14 has the paying done now by a man who has been through it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available to a woman who would not use the same words.

Notice too what he is paying. His vows. The same ones. It is the same promise being paid by a changed man in a changed present, and nothing in the verse suggests that this is a lesser transaction.

You have the same promise available in a different voice, and no verse has ever once made the wording the thing that counts. The passage keeps the vow constant and lets the moment be new, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives a promise from whoever is standing there today.

What a changed wording actually means

Let me say what those different words would signify, because they have been read as a shortfall and they are not one.

The woman who said it the first time meant every syllable and understood almost none of it. That is not a criticism. Nobody understands it and the not understanding is why it had to be a promise.

The woman who would say it today understands a great deal, and would therefore say it differently, and the difference is not a reduction. It is the difference between a promise made in the dark and a promise made with the lights on.

If anything, the second one costs more, because she knows what she is agreeing to.

You are able to make a more expensive promise than the first one, and the change in wording has never once been a weakening of it. Psalm 116:14 has a man pay his vows now, on the far side of what he went through, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman what her own new words actually mean.

You made a promise and you have kept it for years, and saying it again in your own current voice has never once been a downgrade. It is written that the vows are paid now, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives the version that today's woman would actually say.

One sentence, with today in it

Here is the assignment, and it is one sentence, and the point is that it belongs to the present.

Say one sentence of it again, out loud, to God, with today's knowledge in it.

Not the whole thing. One sentence. And put something true from now inside it.

The written word has the vows paid now by a man who has been through it, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives the version today's woman would actually say. You are able to pay it in your current voice, and the wording has never once been what was counted.

Something like: I said I would stay, and I know what that has cost since, and I say it again today.

Out loud, alone, to God. Not to him, and not as an event, and nobody needs to be told it happened.

And if the sentence will not come this afternoon, leave it. Try it in two weeks or do not. Nothing on this page is asking you for anything you do not have.

You are able to say one present tense sentence in the voice you actually have, and it has never once needed to match the first one. Psalm 116:14 puts the paying in the now, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a woman says a sentence in her own current words.
