Forgiving AgainColossians 3:13

Not A Key To The House

This message is for the reader who has been taught that forgiving somebody obliges her to hand back every access she has withdrawn from them

You withdrew something. Not dramatically and not with an announcement.

Access to a conversation. Access to a decision. Access to a part of your life that used to be open and is now not, and the closing happened slowly over about two years after the same thing had happened for the third time.

And you have been told, by somebody who loves you, that forgiving means opening all of it again.

A promise is being kept in that house every day and none of this has touched it. So you have been stuck. Because you do want to forgive it, genuinely, and you do not want to hand the keys back, and you have been told those are the same act.

They are not the same act, and I can show you that in one verse.

Before that, and this comes first on this row and does not move.

If the repeated thing is somebody frightening you, controlling you or hurting you, then this is not a forgiveness question and I am not going to treat it as one. Forgiveness has never once meant staying where somebody is doing harm, and nobody who cares about you would ask you to take it again. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and if there is danger in that house, contact an emergency service or a domestic violence line today.

Not A Key To The House

Forbearing and forgiving

There is a line in Colossians that puts two words side by side, and the fact that there are two is the whole argument.

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another (Colossians 3:13, King James Version)

Two verbs. If forgiving contained everything, the first word would be unnecessary and Paul would not have written it.

Forbear means to hold back, to endure, to make room for something difficult without acting on it. That describes an ongoing posture toward a person while something about them is still true.

Which means the passage assumes there are things still going on that require forbearing, even between people who have forgiven each other. It does not describe a household where everything has been restored to what it was.

You are inside a passage that assumes something is still being lived with, and Colossians has never once described forgiving as a restoration of everything. Colossians 3:13 needs two separate verbs to say what it means, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a technicality.

If forgiving handed the keys back, forbearing would have nothing left to do. The two words exist because they are two different things.

You have been asked to collapse two words the text keeps apart, and no verse has ever once made forgiving into a transfer of access. The passage places forbearing and forgiving side by side as distinct, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman do the second without being obliged to undo her own arrangements.

Access is a separate decision, with its own inputs

Let me make it as clear as I can, because you are going to have to say this to somebody eventually.

Forgiving cancels a debt. It is about the past, it is yours alone to do, and nothing outside you has to change for it to be complete.

Access is about the future and it runs on evidence. It is rebuilt gradually, in response to a pattern, and it is entirely reasonable for it to lag a long way behind the forgiving.

A bank can forgive a debt entirely and still decline to issue a new loan on the same terms. Nobody thinks that is hypocrisy. It is two decisions with two different inputs, and everybody understands that outside of marriage.

You are able to clear the debt and hold the access, and it has never once been hypocrisy to do both. Colossians 3:13 keeps forbearing and forgiving as two separate acts, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unjams two decisions somebody has fused together for you.

You made a promise and you are keeping it with some doors closed, and the covenant has never once required every door to be open. It is written that we are forbearing one another and forgiving one another, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds both of those in one household without contradiction.

Say it, and then say what stays closed

Here is the assignment and the second half is unusually important for you.

Say out loud, alone: I forgive it. Name it plainly.

Then say out loud what stays as it is. Not what changes. What stays.

Something like: I forgive what happened, and the arrangement about the accounts stays exactly as it is, and that is not a punishment.

The reason to say the second half out loud is that somebody has told you those two sentences cannot both be true, and until you have heard yourself say them together, part of you will keep believing her.

You are able to say both of those in one breath, and the saying has never once been a contradiction. Colossians 3:13 puts forbearing and forgiving beside each other as distinct acts, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present the first time a woman hears herself say them together.

The breakthrough

Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this evening.

You are not withholding forgiveness by keeping a door shut, and two years of careful adjustments have never once been a refusal of mercy. Colossians 3:13 says forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who unjams two decisions somebody fused together for you.

And this, which is what I came with.

You are able to cancel a debt and keep every key you hold, and no passage has ever once made those the same act. The word uses two verbs precisely because they are two things, and the same Spirit who moved Colossians is standing at the fence with you.

Say both sentences. Say what stays.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Rule that says mercy hands the keys back, you were never in the passage. Colossians 3:13 says forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, so by the Holy Spirit I clear the debt and keep the door today, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence from a friend of thirty years, you have no scripture standing behind you. The word uses two separate verbs precisely because they are two different acts, and by the Spirit of God I am finished losing an argument that was running in my own head.
  3. Father, You put forbearing and forgiving side by side and You kept them apart on purpose. Your word says forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, so by Your Spirit I say out loud that I forgive it, and then I say plainly what stays.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
