Forgiving AgainEphesians 4:32

I Said It And I Did Not Mean It

This message is for the reader who has announced forgiveness out loud many times to end an argument and has never once actually let anything go

You have said it a lot. That is the first thing to notice.

At eleven at night, when the thing had gone round three times and somebody had to stop it. In the car, when you both needed to be able to walk into a family lunch. On a Sunday, twice, in the same afternoon.

I forgive you. It is fine. Let us not do this any more.

And each time it worked. The argument stopped. Everybody slept. The promise held, in the sense that nobody went anywhere.

And not one of those times did anything actually go anywhere. The thing stayed exactly where it was, and you knew it, and you said the sentence again next time.

Before anything else, and it comes first on this subject every time.

If the repeated thing is somebody frightening you, controlling you or hurting you, then this is not a forgiveness question and I am not going to treat it as one. Forgiveness has never once meant staying where somebody is doing harm, and nobody who cares about you would ask you to take it again. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and if there is danger in that house, contact an emergency service or a domestic violence line today.

For everybody else, this is about a word that has been doing a job it was not built for.

I Said It And I Did Not Mean It

Kind, tenderhearted, forgiving

There is a line in Ephesians that lists three things together, and the order and the company matter.

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another (Ephesians 4:32, King James Version)

Kind. Tenderhearted. Forgiving. Three things, and forgiving is placed third, in the company of two dispositions rather than as a technique for ending a conversation.

Nothing in that verse is about de-escalation. It is not a tool for stopping an argument at eleven at night, and it was never designed to be one.

You have been using a disposition as a tactic, and Ephesians has never once put forgiving in the category of a way to end a row. Ephesians 4:32 sets it beside kindness and tenderheartedness rather than beside strategy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a real act from a useful sentence.

That is not an accusation. Everybody does it. A sentence that reliably stops a bad hour will get used, and there is nothing wicked about a tired person reaching for the thing that works.

You are not a liar, and using a true word to buy peace at midnight has never once been the same as deceiving anybody. The passage places the forgiving among warm things rather than clever ones, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see what they have been doing without condemning them for it.

What the sentence actually cost

Let me be honest about the price, because there has been one and I think you feel it without having named it.

Every time you say it and nothing moves, the word gets a little thinner in your own ears. After enough repetitions it stops meaning anything at all to you, which means that when you eventually want to use it properly, the equipment is worn out.

And there is a second cost. He hears it too. And he has learned, over several years, that the sentence signals the end of a conversation rather than the release of a thing. So when you say it, nothing settles for him either.

Between the two of you, a real word has been worn down into a signal, and neither of you decided that.

You are holding a worn word that can still be repaired, and the wearing has never once been permanent. Ephesians 4:32 keeps forgiving among the tender things rather than the tactical ones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who restores a word that has been doing the wrong job.

You made a promise in a house where a word has been getting thin, and the covenant has never once depended on that sentence working. It is written that we are to be kind and tenderhearted and forgiving one to another, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts weight back into something a person has spent.

Say it once, alone, and add the other half

Here is the assignment, and the location is the important part.

Say out loud, alone, when he is not there: I forgive it. Name the thing.

You are saying it where it cannot possibly be ending an argument, and Ephesians has never once put forgiving in the category of a tactic. Ephesians 4:32 sets it beside kindness and tenderheartedness rather than beside strategy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts the weight back into a word in an empty room.

Alone is deliberate. The word has been damaged by being said in the middle of arguments, and saying it in an empty room takes it out of that job entirely. Nothing about this one is aimed at ending a conversation, because there is no conversation.

Then say out loud what you will do differently. Something like: I forgive the thing about his mother's birthday, and I am not going to be the one who covers for it next year.

Two sentences, alone, in a quiet room. That is the whole thing.

You are able to say it where it cannot be used as a tactic, and it has never once needed the other person present to be a real act. Ephesians 4:32 places the forgiving among dispositions rather than techniques, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in an empty room when a word gets its weight back.

The breakthrough

Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this evening.

You are not a woman who has been lying for four years, and a true word used to buy peace at midnight has never once been a deception. Ephesians 4:32 says be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who takes an accusation off somebody who was only tired.

And this, which is what I came with.

You have a word that can be put back to its proper work, and four years of wearing it thin has never once been permanent. The word keeps forgiving in the company of kindness and tenderheartedness, and the same Spirit who moved Ephesians is standing in your front room this evening.

Say it once, alone. Then say the other half.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Word I have used to end arguments, you were never a lie. Ephesians 4:32 says be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, so by the Holy Spirit I say it once properly, alone, today, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Verdict that four years of saying it makes me a liar, you have no standing here. The word keeps forgiving among the tender things rather than the tactical ones, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating a tired sentence as a deception.
  3. Father, You put forgiving beside kindness and tenderheartedness and never beside a technique. Your word says be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, so by Your Spirit I say out loud that I forgive it, and then I say what I am doing differently.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
