Forgiving AgainLuke 17:3

It Is The Same Thing Again

This message is for the reader facing the same offense for the second or the tenth time who does not know how many times she is supposed to do this

You recognized it before it finished happening.

Same shape. Same afterwards. And you are not shocked, which is its own kind of information, because being unsurprised by something means you have a file on it, and the file has several entries.

And the question you have is not really whether to forgive. You will. You have every other time and you know you will again. The question is what you are actually agreeing to when you do, and whether five times means you have become somebody who can be counted on to absorb this.

Two boundaries first, and neither is decoration.

If the repeated thing is abuse, whether that is violence, control, threats, or being made afraid in your own home, then this article is not for that and forgiveness is not the subject. Nothing here asks anybody to keep absorbing harm, and I am not going to write a sentence that could be read that way. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and contact an emergency service if you are in danger.

And I am not going to quote you the seventy times seven line. It is in the Bible and it is true and it is also the single most misused sentence in the English language when a person is being hurt, and I am not putting it anywhere near you without knowing your situation.

What I want to do instead is take apart what forgiveness actually is, because I think you are holding a definition that is much larger than the real one.

It Is The Same Thing Again

Rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him

There is an instruction in Luke that people skip past because they are looking for the part about forgiving, and the first half is the part I have come for.

Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. (Luke 17:3, King James Version)

Rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

Read the order. The speaking comes first. Before forgiveness is mentioned at all, there is an instruction to say something out loud about what happened.

You are permitted to speak before you forgive, and Luke 17 has never once put silence anywhere in the instruction. Luke 17:3 names the rebuking and the forgiving as two acts in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person do both without collapsing either.

That means silence is not part of the definition. It is not the humble version, it is not the mature version, and it is not what forgiveness looks like when it is done properly. The verse has speech in it before it has forgiveness.

Which tells you that forgiving somebody and saying plainly what happened are not alternatives. They are two parts of the same instruction, in that order.

Luke 17:3 puts the speaking before the forgiving in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach somebody who has been forgiving in silence for years.

You are able to forgive and speak, and silence has never once been part of what forgiveness means. Luke 17:3 says rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him, in that order, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a voice back into a definition that had lost one.

You are keeping a covenant and clearing a debt at the same time, and Luke 17 has never once asked a person to do the second by pretending the first cost nothing. It is written that the instruction puts the speaking and the forgiving in one sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds both halves open at once.

Four things forgiveness is not

Let me be as plain as I can, because I think you have been carrying a definition that includes things that are not in it.

Forgiveness is not reconciliation. Reconciliation involves two people and requires change from both. Forgiveness is something you can do on your own in a car. Luke 17:3 keeps the repenting and the forgiving as separate named things, and the Holy Spirit is not collapsing them into one demand.

Forgiveness is not permission. Forgiving something that happened does not license it to happen again, and nothing in Scripture treats it that way.

Forgiveness is not silence. That is what Luke 17:3 settles by putting the speaking first.

The written word keeps the two acts distinct in a single line, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds them apart in a real house. You have been handed a definition three sizes too big, and the passage has never once carried all of that.

And forgiveness is not the same as trust. Trust is rebuilt out of behavior over time and nobody is owed it on demand. You can genuinely forgive somebody today and be entirely reasonable in not relying on them tomorrow.

Luke 17:3 keeps the speaking, the repentance and the forgiving as separate named things, and the Holy Spirit is not asking anybody to collapse them into one requirement.

What is left, when you take those four out, is smaller and much more doable: you are letting go of your claim against them. That is all it is. That is the whole of it.

You are letting go of a claim, and it has never once meant handing over your judgment about what happens next. The written word names the speaking, the repenting and the forgiving as distinct things, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes three burdens off a definition that only ever carried one.

You have a promise that does not require you to call this nothing, and forgiveness has never once been the same thing as agreeing it did not happen. Luke 17:3 names the rebuking and the forgiving as two acts in one instruction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person do both without collapsing either.

Say both halves out loud

So here is the assignment, and it is two sentences and both are said out loud.

Say out loud that you forgive it. Then say out loud what you will do differently.

The first, alone, to God, in plain words: I forgive this. I am letting go of my claim against them for it. Say it even if you do not feel it, because forgiveness is a decision that feelings catch up with slowly, and often much later.

The second is the half people leave out. Say what you are doing differently, and say it in behavior rather than in resentment.

I am not going to arrange that trip again. I am not going to be the one who rings. I am not lending it a second time. I am going to say something the next time it happens rather than waiting three days. Luke 17:3 has an action taken alongside the forgiving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a decision said out loud.

Say it out loud to yourself first, so it exists as a decision rather than as a mood. Whether you say it to them is your call and depends on things I do not know.

Because the reason this has felt like being walked over is not the forgiving. It is that the forgiving has been the only thing that ever happens, and nothing on your side has ever changed, and five identical responses have taught everybody involved what to expect.

Luke 17:3 has an action taken alongside the forgiving rather than instead of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody says both halves out loud.

You are able to forgive and change something at the same time, and the two have never once been in conflict. Luke 17:3 puts speech and forgiveness in the same instruction, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a person saying the second sentence as well as the first.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are not a doormat, and forgiving this has never once required you to be silent about it. I am not asking anybody to keep absorbing anything, and if what repeats is harm, none of this is for you. Luke 17:3 puts the speaking before the forgiving in the same sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who hands a person back a voice they thought forgiveness had taken.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are letting go of a claim and nothing more than that, and it has always been a smaller thing than the definition you were carrying. The written word separates the speaking, the repenting and the forgiving, and the Spirit of God is the one who lifts three things off a definition that only ever held one.

Both halves. Out loud.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sense of myself as a man who simply absorbs things, you are not who I am and you never were. Luke 17:3 says rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get a sixth time in the name of Jesus.
  2. Definition of forgiveness that included silence, permission, trust and reconciliation, you were three sizes too big. The word names the speaking and the forgiving as two separate acts in one instruction, and by the Holy Spirit I am done handing over my judgment along with my claim.
  3. Father, You put the speaking first and You put it in the same sentence. Your word says rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him, so by Your Spirit I forgive this out loud today, and I say out loud what I am doing differently.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
