Nothing is wrong. That is what makes it so hard to describe to anybody.
The bills are paid. Nobody shouts. He asks about your day and listens to the answer. You still do the crossword on Sunday. There has been no event, no betrayal, no cruelty of any kind.
And the house is silent in a way it did not use to be, and you cannot tell whether what you are living in is peace or the very slow end of something.
That not knowing is worse than either answer would be. You could work with peace. You could even work with an ending. What you cannot work with is a year of not being able to tell.
I want to be honest about what this article can and cannot do.
It cannot tell you which one it is. Nobody who is not in your house can tell you that, and anybody who says they can from a website is selling something.
What it can do is put somebody in the quiet with you. Which turns out to matter more than the interpretation does.

In the midst of thee
There is a line in Zephaniah that surprises people the first time they meet it, and the preposition is the part I want.
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty (Zephaniah 3:17, King James Version)
In the midst. Not over. Not near. Not watching from a suitable distance with a view. In the middle of it.
Zephaniah is a short and mostly severe book, and this line arrives near the end of it, in a passage about a place that had been through a great deal. The location of God in that sentence is inside the situation.
You are living in a house with somebody already in the middle of it, and Zephaniah has never once put God at the edge of a quiet year. Zephaniah 3:17 says the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a preposition into company.
And then the verse does something even stranger. It says He rejoices, and it says He is quiet in His love, and it says He sings.
Read that against your silent house. There is somebody in the middle of it who is not confused by the quiet and is not waiting for it to resolve before He is glad.
You have somebody glad in the middle of a year you cannot interpret, and He has never once required an explanation of it before being there. The passage puts the joy inside the situation rather than after it, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a hallway.
What the quiet is not
Let me clear out three things, because I think one of them is sitting on you.
The quiet is not a sin. Nobody chose it. It arrived. A person cannot repent of an atmosphere.
The quiet is not proof. It is not proof of contentment and it is not proof of an ending. It is a condition, and conditions are not verdicts. Silence has been the sound of a good marriage and the sound of a bad one, in the same street, in the same week.
And the quiet is not a thing you can argue with. You have tried. You have tried more conversation, less conversation, going out, staying in, and the atmosphere does not respond to management, because atmospheres never do.
You are not failing to fix something that was never yours to fix, and the quiet has never once been a task assigned to you. Zephaniah 3:17 puts the might inside the situation rather than in the hands of the person living there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a management job off somebody who never applied for it.
You have been carrying an interpretation as though it were a duty, and no verse has ever once asked a person to know what their year means. It is written that He is in the midst and is mighty, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person live in an unexplained house.
Say it, and then do one plain thing
Here is the assignment and it is small on purpose, because in a quiet year the small things are the only ones that actually happen.
Say out loud, alone, in the house: the promise is not the feeling. What I promised was presence, and I am present.
Say it in the kitchen. Say it to God and not to him. He does not need to know this happened.
The passage puts God in the middle of the situation rather than at the edge of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is standing there while a woman speaks. You are saying it in a room that already has somebody in it, and the quiet has never once emptied that room.
Then do one ordinary thing for him. Not a gesture. Nothing that changes the temperature of the evening. Order the part for the thing that is broken. Get the prescription. Put fuel in the car.
Small enough that he does not ask what it is about.
You are able to speak and act inside a year you cannot explain, and it has never once been necessary to understand a quiet before living faithfully in it. Zephaniah 3:17 has God in the midst and mighty and glad, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a kitchen while somebody says one sentence to nobody.
And do not go looking for a change afterward. The checking is what turns a quiet into a verdict.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this morning.
You are not living in a house God has stepped out of, and a quiet year has never once been His absence. Zephaniah 3:17 says the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not my telling you, who makes a preposition into a person standing in a hallway.
And this, which is what I came with.
You are free to stop interpreting the year, and nothing has ever once required you to name a thing in order to keep a promise inside it. The word puts Him in the middle and glad and quiet in His love, and the same Spirit who moved Zephaniah is standing in your kitchen at six in the morning.
Say the sentence. Then do the plain thing.
Declare this over yourself
- Silence in this house, you were never proof of anything. Zephaniah 3:17 says the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, so by the Holy Spirit I stop deciding on a Tuesday what this year means, in the name of Jesus.
- Job of naming this year, you are finished with me. The word puts God inside the situation and asks nobody living there to decide between contentment and an ending, and by the Spirit of God I am done managing a silent home.
- Father, You are in the midst of this and You are glad in the middle of it. Your word says the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, so by Your Spirit I say out loud today that the promise is not the feeling, and then I do one plain thing for him.
