The Feeling WentPsalm 100:5

It Does Not Run On My Mood

This message is for the reader who has begun to suspect that a promise which depends on a feeling was never really a promise at all

The thought arrived on an ordinary evening, and it was not a dramatic thought, which is why it has been so hard to shift.

It went like this. If what I promised depended on how I felt, and how I feel has changed, then either the promise has changed with it or the promise was never really about anything.

That is a clean piece of reasoning. It has the shape of good logic. And it has been sitting in you for months getting more solid, the way a thought does when nobody is allowed to look at it.

I want to look at it, because there is a flaw in it, and the flaw is in the first line.

You did not promise a feeling. Nobody ever has. Not one vow in the history of the world has been an undertaking to feel a particular way, because a person cannot deliver that and everybody knows it.

So the whole structure rests on a premise nobody ever agreed to. Take that line out and the rest of it does not stand.

But I do not want to leave you with a logical repair, because logic does not warm a house. Let me show you what the promise was actually built on instead.

It Does Not Run On My Mood

Truth that outlasts a generation

There is a line at the end of Psalm 100 that says something specific about durability, and the timescale in it is the part I want.

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations (Psalm 100:5, King James Version)

Everlasting. To all generations. That is not a claim about a good mood on God's part.

A mood does not endure to all generations. A mood does not endure to next Thursday. What endures like that is a different kind of thing altogether: something rooted in what a person is rather than in how a person is doing.

You are inside something rooted in character rather than in weather, and Psalm 100 has never once described the durable thing as a feeling. Psalm 100:5 puts the enduring on His truth and His mercy across generations, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that the pattern for a promise rather than a fact about God alone.

And that is the model your vow was made after. Not a report on how two people felt in a warm room in June. A commitment about what one of them would do, which is a thing that can survive a mood because it never lived in one.

You have made the same kind of promise the psalm is describing, and it has never once been running on a mood. The passage locates the endurance in truth and in mercy rather than in a state, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see their own vow in that shape.

Where the reasoning went wrong

Let me take the thought apart properly, because half measures leave it standing.

The argument assumes that a promise is an expression of a current feeling. On that view, when the feeling goes, the expression is out of date, and a vow becomes something like a weather report from a previous decade.

But a promise is the opposite of a weather report. It exists precisely because feelings change. Nobody promises anything about a thing that is guaranteed to stay the same. You do not vow that the sun will rise.

A vow is what a person makes when they know something can change and they intend to hold anyway. The changeability is the reason for it, not the thing that dissolves it.

You are keeping the very thing a vow was invented for, and a change in feeling has never once been outside what was accounted for. Psalm 100:5 rests endurance on what a thing is rather than on how it feels, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that argument land somewhere below the head.

You were not describing your mood in that room, and no promise in the history of the world has ever once been a forecast. It is written that His truth endures to all generations, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a person what kind of thing they actually made.

Say it, then do the plain thing

Here is the assignment, and it is the same one this site always gives, and the sameness is deliberate.

Say out loud, alone: the promise is not the feeling. What I promised was presence, and I am present.

Say it once, plainly, without waiting for it to feel true. Feeling true is not a requirement and it is not going to happen this morning.

Then do one ordinary thing for them. Ordinary. Deal with the thing that has been on the list for three weeks. Fill the car. Pick up whatever needs picking up.

Small enough that nobody asks about it.

You are able to act out of what a thing is rather than out of how it feels, and the acting has never once required the feeling to catch up first. Psalm 100:5 puts the enduring in truth and mercy rather than in a state, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a plain errand in a flat month.

And do not check afterward. Checking is the same thought in a different coat.

The breakthrough

Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this evening.

You are not holding a promise that was never really about anything, and a changed feeling has never once been a change in what was promised. Psalm 100:5 says his truth endureth to all generations, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who takes the first line out of a clean argument and lets the rest of it fall.

And this, which is what I came with.

You are keeping precisely what a vow was invented for, and it has never once run on a mood. The word roots endurance in truth and mercy rather than in how anybody is doing, and the same Spirit who moved that psalm is standing on the step with you.

Say it. Then do the plain thing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Suspicion that this was never a promise, you were never sound reasoning. Psalm 100:5 says his truth endureth to all generations, so by the Holy Spirit I pull your first line out from under you, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Argument that a changed mood ends a vow, you have no standing in this house. The word roots endurance in truth and mercy rather than in how anybody is doing, and by the Spirit of God I am finished treating a promise as a weather report.
  3. Father, Your truth endures across generations and it has never once been a mood. Your word says for the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations, so by Your Spirit I say out loud today that the promise is not the feeling.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
