There was a year in that house that took everything out of both of you.
Somebody was ill. Or somebody's mother was, or a child was, and it went on far longer than anybody expected, and the two of you got through it by becoming very efficient and not talking about very much.
And then it ended, one way or the other. And everybody said you must be so relieved. And the relief was real, for about two weeks.
Then the flatness arrived and it has not gone anywhere since, and now, eighteen months on, you cannot tell whether what you are is exhausted or whether the marriage is finished.
That is a genuinely difficult question and I am not going to pretend it is easy. Those two states feel identical from inside. Both of them are gray. Both of them make a person not want to be spoken to at nine at night.
What I am going to do is give you a reason to let it be tiredness for a while longer, and something to stand on while you do.
I will not tell you the flatness lifts. Nobody has the standing to promise that. But I will tell you what a year like that costs, because I do not think anybody has costed it out for you.

Held up rather than repaired
There is a line in Isaiah 41 that people quote for courage, and I want it for something narrower than courage.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee (Isaiah 41:10, King James Version)
Look at the verbs. Strengthen. Help. Uphold. Every one of them describes something done to somebody who is still weak while it is happening.
That is the useful part. It is not a promise that the weakness is over. It is a promise about who is doing the holding while it continues.
You are being upheld in the middle of the tiredness, and Isaiah 41 has never once waited for a person to recover before putting a hand under them. Isaiah 41:10 has the strengthening and the helping done to somebody who is still afraid, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reach a house eighteen months after a hard year.
And notice what it does not say. It does not say I will explain this to you. It does not offer a diagnosis. It offers a person.
You have somebody with you before you know what this is, and the word has never once made an accurate self diagnosis the condition of help. The passage supplies presence rather than an explanation, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a person who cannot name their own condition.
What that year actually cost
Let me cost it out, because I think that year got written off as over and it is not.
A long illness in a house does something specific. It converts two people into a crew. You divide tasks. You stop asking how the other one is, because the answer is always the same and there is nothing to be done about it. You get efficient, and efficiency is the enemy of tenderness, because tenderness is slow.
And when it ends, the crew does not automatically turn back into a marriage. Nobody rings a bell. Both of you learned a mode over eighteen months and neither of you has come out of it.
That is not an ending. That is a habit with a very deep groove worn into it.
And you are, in addition, more tired than you have ever admitted to anybody. People underestimate how long a body takes to come back from a year like that. It is not weeks. It is often more than a year.
You are still inside the cost of that year, and eighteen months has never once been long enough to be finished paying it. Isaiah 41:10 puts the upholding into the weakness rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person be tired without it meaning something.
You were a crew for a year and you have not been demobilized, and no verse has ever once required a person to change modes on schedule. It is written that He strengthens and helps and upholds, and the Spirit of God is the one who is patient with a groove worn deep.
Say it, and do one small thing
So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately tiny, because tiny is what a tired person can actually do.
Say out loud, alone, outside if you can: the promise is not the feeling. What I promised was presence, and I am present.
Then do one ordinary thing for them. One. Not a campaign, not a new start, not a conversation about the marriage.
Ordinary. Bring the coat in off the line. Deal with the letter that has been on the side for three weeks. Fill the car.
You are able to do one small plain thing while exhausted, and it has never once needed energy you do not have. Isaiah 41:10 promises the strengthening rather than requiring it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with somebody carrying a coat in from the line.
And then rest. Genuinely rest. A tired person doing one small thing and then resting is doing the assignment properly, and a tired person doing six things is not doing it better.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not looking at the end of your marriage, and eighteen months of exhaustion after a year like that has never once been a diagnosis. Isaiah 41:10 says fear thou not, for I am with thee, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not my telling you, who lets a tired person be tired without a verdict attached to it.
And this, which is what I came with.
You are held while you are still weak, and He has never once required you to be recovered before putting a hand under you. The word offers strengthening and helping and upholding to somebody who is still afraid, and the same Spirit who moved Isaiah is standing on the path with you this afternoon.
Say it. Then do the one small thing. Then rest.
Declare this over yourself
- Confusion between tired and finished, you were never a diagnosis. Isaiah 41:10 says fear thou not, for I am with thee, so by the Holy Spirit I let this be exhaustion for a while longer, in the name of Jesus.
- Deadline I set myself for coming back, you have no authority in this house. The word puts the strengthening into the weakness rather than after it, and by the Spirit of God I am finished demanding that a body recover on schedule.
- Father, You uphold people who are still weak and still afraid, and You did not ask them to name their own condition first. Your word says fear thou not; for I am with thee, so by Your Spirit I say out loud today that the promise is not the feeling, and then I do one small thing and sit down.
