The Witness In The Room

Two people live in that house. You have done the arithmetic on that basis for years and it has produced a settled result.

One of you is holding this. Therefore the ratio is one to one, and the one who is holding it is outnumbered by nothing and supported by nothing, and the whole weight sits on a single person.

I want to challenge the count rather than the conclusion, because the conclusion follows perfectly well from the count and the count is wrong.

Before that, and before anything else on this row.

If the person you live with frightens you, controls you, hurts you, or has made you smaller and more afraid than you used to be, then none of what follows applies and I am not going to dress it up in the language of promises. That is not a marriage kept alone. Nobody who cares about you would tell you to keep absorbing it. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and if there is danger in that house, contact an emergency service or a domestic violence line today.

For everybody else, let us count the room again.

Thou God seest me

There is a moment in Genesis with a woman who has been used badly and has run into the desert, and what she says at the end of it is the most useful sentence in this article.

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me (Genesis 16:13, King James Version)

Thou God seest me. She names Him for the thing He had just done, which was not to fix her situation. He saw her.

She goes back into a hard house afterward. The circumstances do not change in that chapter. What changes is that she knows the room she is in has somebody in it who is watching, and that turns out to be enough to walk back with.

You are being seen in a house where you thought the arithmetic was one, and Genesis 16 has never once required a rescue for the seeing to count. Genesis 16:13 has a woman name God for seeing her rather than for fixing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact in a kitchen rather than a thought about a desert.

That is what corrects the count. There are not two people in that room while you are keeping this. There is a witness, and the witness has been there since the day the promise was made.

You have had somebody in the room the whole time, and the word has never once left a person keeping a covenant unobserved. The passage puts the seeing before any change in circumstance, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the seeing on an ordinary Tuesday.

Why being seen changes the weight

Let me say why this matters practically, because it can sound like a consolation and it is not one.

An unwitnessed thing gets heavier. That is not sentiment, it is how people work. Anybody who has done a hard job with nobody watching knows that half the weight is the invisibility.

And the reverse is true and is stranger. A load does not get lighter when somebody sees it, but it stops growing. The accumulation stops. The thing becomes finite because it is finally in the world rather than only inside one head.

That is what Hagar received in the desert. Not relief. A witness. And she was able to walk back into the same house with it.

You are carrying something that has been growing because nobody could see it, and the growing has never once been a measure of the actual weight. Genesis 16:13 gives a woman a witness rather than an escape, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stops a thing accumulating in a person who has been alone with it.

You were promised to and you promised, and the covenant has never once been kept in an empty room. It is written that she called Him the God who sees, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been the second person in that house since the beginning.

Tell one person, and make the count visible

Here is the assignment, and after all that counting you can see exactly why it is this one.

Tell one person the truth about how alone this has been.

The witness in the room has been there the whole time. What has not been there is a human being who knows. Those are two different kinds of company and a person needs both.

It is written that a woman in a desert called Him the God who sees, and the Spirit of God is the one doing that seeing in a kitchen on a Tuesday. You are seen already and about to be known as well, and the two have never once been in competition.

One person, chosen because they can hear something without instructing you. A friend of long standing. A pastor, if that is a safe person in your case. A counselor.

One sentence, not the years: I have been holding this on my own and I have not told anybody that.

You are able to add one more to the count in the visible world, and it has never once been a failure of faith to want somebody with skin on. Genesis 16:13 has the seeing come first and the walking back come after, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a woman finally lets another person see the load.
