The same words. Not similar. The same ones, in the same order, in the same church, said by your grandmother in nineteen fifty two and by your mother in nineteen seventy nine and by you.
For a long time that felt like the best thing about the day. A line of people saying one sentence down through a century.
Then one afternoon it turned over on you, and it has not turned back. Because if the words came down the line, and the church came down the line, and the wording was not chosen but handed over, then what exactly did you do that day?
Did you promise something, or did you take part in something?
That is a real question and I am not going to wave it away. A person can absolutely go through a ceremony as a participant in a family custom and never make a promise at all. It happens. You know it happens.
So let us find out which one it was, and there is a way to find out that does not involve interrogating yourself.
An old sentence in a new mouth
There is a moment in Joshua where a man says a thing in front of a large crowd, and everything about how he says it is useful here.
as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15, King James Version)
That sentence had been available for a very long time before Joshua said it. The idea was not his. The God was not new. Nothing in the content of it was original to the man speaking.
And yet nobody has ever read Joshua 24 and thought he was merely joining in with something. The sentence is old and the saying of it is his.
You are able to say an inherited sentence as your own, and Joshua 24 has never once treated a handed down form as somebody else's speech. The passage has a man say a familiar thing about his own house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence land in a particular mouth on a particular day.
Look at what makes it his. Not novelty. He puts his own house in it. As for me and my house. He names who is covered by it and then he says it out loud in front of people.
You have named your own house inside an old form, and the word has never once required a person to invent a promise in order to mean one. Joshua says a sentence older than he is and it counts as his, and the Spirit of God is the one who does that same work in a church in nineteen ninety.
What tradition can and cannot do
Here is the honest division, because the two things really are different and wanting them separated is a fair instinct.
A tradition can supply the words, the room, the order of service, the flowers and the meal afterward. A tradition can carry a family for a century and it is a good thing and I am not here to sniff at it.
A tradition cannot open your mouth. That part was never automated. Somebody has to speak.
And on the day, somebody did. You did. Your grandmother did not say it for you in nineteen fifty two, and the form did not say it for you either. A form is a container. It cannot promise anything, because it has no mouth.
You are the one who spoke, and a hundred years of family custom has never once been able to say a vow on anybody's behalf. Joshua 24:15 has an old declaration made personal by a man opening his mouth about his own house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a person speaks rather than performs.
You have a mouth that a custom cannot borrow, and Joshua 24 has never once let a form do a person's speaking for them. It is written that a man declared for his own house out loud in front of a nation, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that true of a man in a suit in nineteen ninety.
So the answer to your question is available, and it is this: you were the one who said it. Whether it felt original while you were doing so is not the test and never was.
Say the old words as your own
Here is what I would go and do, and I would do it in the kitchen because that is where our family did everything that mattered.
Say the old vows out loud, alone, to God, in the exact wording your grandmother used. Do not modernize them. Do not translate them. Use the inherited sentence.
Then, at the end, add the Joshua part in your own voice: as for me and this house.
That is the whole thing. It takes a minute and nobody needs to know.
You are speaking an old sentence into a real room, and the age of the words has never once thinned the promise inside them. Joshua 24:15 puts a familiar declaration in a man's own mouth about his own household, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a hundred year old form carry a promise made this morning.
And do not do it as a tribute to your grandmother. She had hers. This one is yours.
Here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not a man who only took part in something, and using your grandmother's wording has never once made the promise hers instead of yours. Joshua 24:15 has an old sentence become a man's own by being spoken over his own house, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who settles that in a person.
And this, which is what I came with.
You have a promise you made with your own mouth, and no inherited form has ever once been able to speak for anybody. The word puts an ancient declaration in a living man's voice, and the same Spirit who moved Joshua is in your kitchen this evening.
Say the old words. Then add your house to them.
Declare this over yourself
- Doubt that I inherited only a tradition, you were never the truth of it. Joshua 24:15 has a man make an old sentence his own by naming his own house, so by the Holy Spirit I say the words again as mine, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that I only repeated her, you have no standing in this kitchen. The word shows an ancient declaration counted as a man's own speech, and by the Spirit of God I am finished treating a handed down form as somebody else's vow.
- Father, You heard me and not my family the day I said it. Your word has Joshua say as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD, so by Your Spirit I say the old words out loud tonight and I put this house inside them.
