Keeping It Is Not Earning It

There is a number in your head. You would not call it that, but it functions like one.

Every year you have stayed when it was thin. Every time you did the hard thing first. Every occasion you swallowed the sentence you had every right to say.

And somewhere along the way, without one deliberate decision, all of that stopped being what you gave and started being what you are owed.

You notice it in small ways. A flash of something when he is thanked by somebody else for a thing you also did. A sentence that arrives in your head during an argument that begins after everything I have.

I am not here to take the keeping away from you. It was real, it cost you, and you did it.

I am here because a ledger will eat a person, and yours has been running quietly for a long time now.

Before anything else, and this is not a formality on this row.

If the person you live with frightens you, controls you, hurts you, or has made you smaller and more afraid than you used to be, then none of what follows applies and I am not going to dress it up in the language of promises. That is not a marriage kept alone, and nobody who cares about you would tell you to keep absorbing it. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and if there is danger in that house, contact an emergency service or a domestic violence line today.

As much as lieth in you

There is a line in Romans that draws a boundary most people never notice is there.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men (Romans 12:18, King James Version)

Two qualifiers before the instruction even arrives. If it be possible. As much as lieth in you.

That is scripture acknowledging, in advance, that a person controls only their own half of a thing. The peace is instructed, and the responsibility is bounded, and the boundary is drawn at the edge of what lies in you.

You are responsible for a half and never for a whole, and Romans has never once put another person's part on your account. Romans 12:18 draws the line at as much as lieth in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a boundary into a relief rather than a limitation.

That is the answer to the ledger, and it is a strange one. The ledger exists because you have been holding both halves. If a person keeps their own half and also carries the missing half, the missing half accumulates, and accumulation is what a debt is.

You have been recording a shortfall that was never yours to record, and the word has never once appointed you the accountant of somebody else's part. The passage bounds the responsibility at the edge of what lies in you, and the Spirit of God is the one who closes a book a person has been keeping without meaning to.

What the ledger is actually made of

Let me say what I think is underneath it, because it is not greed and it is not pettiness.

A ledger is what fidelity turns into when nobody sees it.

If somebody had said, at any point in those years, I can see what this is costing, the accounting would never have started. Witnessed faithfulness does not accumulate. Unwitnessed faithfulness does, because a person needs the thing to register somewhere, and if it registers nowhere outside they keep the record inside.

You are running an account because nothing outside you was counting, and Romans 12 has never once appointed you the bookkeeper of somebody else's half. Romans 12:18 bounds the responsibility at as much as lieth in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who closes a book a person kept without deciding to.

A promise kept in the dark starts turning into a debt, and that is not greed. It is what happens to a covenant nobody has ever acknowledged out loud.

That is why the assignment on this row is telling somebody rather than anything grander. It is not about getting help. It is about the keeping being seen, which is what stops it turning into a debt.

You are keeping something that needs a witness rather than a reward, and the ledger has never once been about wanting to be repaid. Romans 12:18 bounds a person's responsibility at their own edge, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present the moment somebody else finally sees what has been going on.

You were faithful and unwitnessed for years, and the arithmetic that started in you has never once been a fault in your character. It is written that we live peaceably as much as lieth in us, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a woman what the number in her head is actually made of.

Tell one person, so it stops accumulating

Here is the assignment and now you can see why it is this one.

Tell one person the truth about how alone this has been.

One. Chosen because they can hear something without instructing you. A friend of long standing. A pastor, if that is a safe person in your case. A counselor.

It is written that we live peaceably as much as lieth in us and no further, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps the boundary where it was drawn. You are handing over a record rather than an invoice, and being seen has never once been the same as being repaid.

You are about to be witnessed rather than repaid, and the word has never once made repayment the thing that stops a ledger growing. Romans 12:18 draws the line at a person's own edge and leaves the rest outside it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present the moment somebody else can see the weight.

One sentence, not the whole account: I have been keeping this on my own for a long time and it has started turning into something I am owed, and I have not said that to anybody.

You do not need them to agree with you. You do not need them to take your side. You need one person to know it is happening.

You are able to hand the record to somebody outside your own head, and it has never once been necessary to be repaid in order to put it down. Romans 12:18 puts the responsibility inside a boundary and leaves the rest outside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when unwitnessed faithfulness is finally witnessed.
