Keeping It AloneEcclesiastes 4:10

I Stopped Telling Anyone

This message is for the reader who told one person once, was handed advice instead of company, and has said nothing to anybody in the years since

You told one person. Once. About nine years ago.

And she was kind, and she meant well, and within about ninety seconds she was telling you what to do. Books. A retreat. A thing that had worked for her sister.

And you sat there nodding and something in you closed, quietly, and it has not opened since.

You have kept the promise the whole nine years, without help and without company, and you have never blamed her. You have said, to yourself, several times, that she was only trying to help. Which is true and has not made the slightest difference to the fact that you have told nobody anything for nine years.

Before we go further, the thing that goes first on this row and does not get softened.

If the person you live with frightens you, controls you, hurts you, or has made you smaller and more afraid than you used to be, then none of what follows applies and I am not going to dress it up in the language of promises. That is not a marriage kept alone, and nobody who cares about you would tell you to keep absorbing it. Talk to somebody qualified where you live, this week, and if there is danger in that house, contact an emergency service or a domestic violence line today.

For everybody else, this is about the specific shape of a silence that started with an answer.

I Stopped Telling Anyone

Woe to him that is alone when he falleth

There is a passage in Ecclesiastes about two people being better than one, and the reason it is here is the specific thing it names.

if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up (Ecclesiastes 4:10, King James Version)

Lift up. Help him up. That is what the second person is for in that sentence.

Not advise. Not instruct. Not recommend a book. The whole function described there is physical and simple: to be the one who is present when somebody goes down.

You are entitled to that kind of help and asked for it once and got something else, and Ecclesiastes has never once described the second person as an advisor. Ecclesiastes 4:10 puts the lifting up as the whole of the office, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the difference between company and instruction visible to somebody who has been confusing them for nine years.

That is the piece that has been missing. What you needed that day was a hand under an arm. What you got was a reading list.

You were not wrong to want the one and not the other, and no verse has ever once made advice the substitute for presence. The passage names lifting rather than advising, and the Spirit of God is the one who validates a distinction a woman could never quite put into words.

The silence has a shape and the shape can be changed

Now the practical part, because knowing why you stopped does not by itself start anything.

You stopped because of an outcome, and an outcome is a single event, and one event is not a rule about the world.

The problem is that the event taught you a lesson far larger than it earned: that telling people means being handed instructions. That is not true. It is true of that woman on that day about that subject, and it is not a description of everybody.

It is written that woe comes to the one who is alone in a fall, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a second person under an arm. You are able to choose differently this time, and one afternoon has never once had the authority to close a category of people.

And here is the part that changes what is possible. You can choose the next person for the exact quality that was missing.

Not chosen for kindness. She was kind. Not chosen for wisdom. She may well have been wise. Chosen for the one thing: the ability to hear something without immediately telling you what to do about it.

You know who those people are. Everybody does. They are usually quieter and there are fewer of them than the kind ones.

You are able to pick for the missing quality this time, and one bad outcome has never once made a whole category of people unsafe. Ecclesiastes 4:10 defines the help as lifting rather than instructing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who guides somebody toward the right person rather than the nearest one.

You have been alone for nine years on the strength of ninety seconds, and the ninety seconds has never once had the authority to decide that. It is written that woe comes to the one who is alone when he falls, and the Spirit of God is the one who breaks a rule that was made out of a single afternoon.

Tell one person, chosen on purpose

Here is the assignment and the whole of it is in the choosing.

Tell one person the truth about how alone this has been.

Choose them for one quality. Not warmth. Not experience. The ability to listen without a solution arriving in the next minute.

And say a sentence, not a history: I have been on my own in my marriage for a long time and I have not told anybody that in nine years.

If they start advising anyway, and some will, you are allowed to say: I do not need an answer, I just needed one person to know. That sentence is not rude. It is a piece of information they cannot get any other way.

You are permitted to say what kind of help you want, and asking for company instead of instruction has never once been ungrateful. Ecclesiastes 4:10 names the lifting as the office, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody asks plainly for the thing they actually need.

If nobody comes to mind, a counselor or a pastor counts, and often counts more, because the job description is already correct.

The breakthrough

Here is what I believe is going out over somebody this morning.

You are not somebody who was refused, and ninety seconds of somebody else's good intentions has never once been a ruling on nine years. Ecclesiastes 4:10 says woe to him that is alone when he falleth, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my telling you, who opens a door that shut without anybody choosing it.

And this, which is what I came with.

You have permission to choose the next person for the exact thing that was missing, and asking for company rather than instruction has never once been ingratitude. The word names the office as lifting rather than advising, and the same Spirit who moved Ecclesiastes is standing in the hall with you.

Tell one person. Choose them on purpose.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Answer I got the one time I told somebody, you were never the reason to stop. Ecclesiastes 4:10 says woe to him that is alone when he falleth, so by the Holy Spirit I choose one person on purpose this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Rule I made out of ninety seconds in a parking lot, you have no authority over nine years. The word names the help as lifting up rather than advising, and by the Spirit of God I am finished treating one afternoon as a description of everybody.
  3. Father, You said woe to the one who is alone in a fall and You meant a hand under an arm. Your word says if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow, so by Your Spirit I tell one trusted person the truth about how alone this has been.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
