I Have Run Out Of Requests

For years you knew exactly what to ask for.

That he would understand. That the money would settle. That the season would pass. Each one had a shape and each one was a real request and you meant all of them.

And then, somewhere in the last year or two, you stopped being able to finish the sentence.

Because what would you ask for now? Not that he changes, because you no longer think that is the thing. Not that it goes back to how it was, because you do not want that either. Not that it ends, because you are not asking for that.

There is no request that fits. So the praying stopped, not by decision, but by running out of things to say. And the promise underneath all of it is still standing, which is the part that makes the silence so strange.

I want to take the pressure off the asking, because I think the asking has been carrying more weight than it was ever meant to.

The still small voice

There is a passage in first Kings where a man who has run out entirely is met, and the meeting is famously not what he expects.

and after the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12, King James Version)

There is wind first, which tears mountains. Then an earthquake. Then a fire. And God is in none of them.

And then something so small the text struggles for words. A still small voice. A sound of gentle stillness, in some renderings. Almost nothing.

You are being met by something that does not require a request to arrive, and 1 Kings has never once made the asking the condition of the meeting. 1 Kings 19:12 has the encounter come after the noise and in the smallest possible form, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available to a woman who has run out of words.

Notice what Elijah gets. Not an answer to a question he asked. He did not ask anything. He had gone off to die and the meeting arrives anyway.

You have never once needed to bring a request in order to be met, and the word has never made prayer a transaction. The passage delivers the encounter with nothing requested, and the Spirit of God is the one who comes to somebody who has stopped being able to formulate anything.

Presence is not a consolation prize

Let me say something about what is actually on offer, because there is a lie in the neighborhood and it needs killing.

The lie is that presence is what you get when you cannot have an answer. That God turning up is the runner up prize for a prayer that did not work.

That is exactly backwards, and Elijah is the evidence. He had seen fire come down from heaven a chapter earlier. He had seen the biggest answer available to a human being in that century. And it is the still small voice that gets him back on his feet, not the fire.

Presence outranks outcome. That is not a comfort a preacher invented for people whose situations do not improve. It is what happens in the text.

You are being offered the thing that actually restores rather than the thing you were asking for, and the word has never once ranked those the way people do. 1 Kings 19:12 puts the restoration in the smallest and quietest thing in the chapter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that the answer instead of a substitute for one.

You made a promise in front of somebody who has never once required a request to stay in the room, and the covenant is not held up by your ability to ask. It is written that after the fire there was a still small voice, and the Spirit of God is the one who is quiet in a house where a woman has stopped asking.

One sentence, and it does not have to be a request

Here is the assignment, and it deliberately removes the thing that has run out.

Say one sentence of prayer out loud about the marriage, in the room where the two of you actually live.

You are able to bring a sentence with nothing in it to ask for, and 1 Kings has never once made a request the condition of a meeting. 1 Kings 19:12 delivers the encounter after the noise in the smallest possible form with nothing requested, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a quiet kitchen.

And it does not have to be a request. It can simply be a statement. Something like: God, I do not know what to ask for any more, and this marriage belongs to You.

That is a complete prayer. There is nothing missing from it. The whole of it is address and honesty and the marriage put in His hands, and the request that you cannot formulate is not required for any of that.

Out loud, when he is not in the room.

You are able to pray without asking for anything, and it has never once been the request that made it a prayer. 1 Kings 19:12 delivers the meeting with nothing requested, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a woman says a sentence with no ask in it.
